Wasn’t the whole point of streaming to give us the freedom and accessibility to watch whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted? So how is it that we still end up watching the same three shows? And, worse still, how come so little of it is any good?
Canadian superstar funnyman, Will Arnett, took time out between taping episodes of his mega hit podcast SmartLess and his new improvised comedy series from Netflix, Murderville, to let us in on a list of some of his favorite series in one of his favorite genres: foreign crime shows. May it broaden your binge-ing horizons.
BABYLON BERLIN
“An incredible neo-noir mystery from the last gasp of the Weimer Republic years in Germany, based on the novels by Volker Kutscher.”
DARK
“Another great German show, this time from Netflix. A science fiction thriller, best described as a time-travelling bonanza.”
GOMORRAH
“Italian show loosely based on the book of the same name – which also inspired the 2008 film, although they’re not similar – set around the Naples mafia, the Camorra.”
FAUDA
“Also streaming on Netflix, Fauda is an unbelievable show about the anti-terrorist elite special branch within the Israeli military operating in Israel.”
THE TWELVE
“Belgium show in Flemish, about a jury who are trying to solve an unusual murder case, where a school headmistress is accused of two different murders many years apart.”
THE MIRE
“Polish mystery. A local politician and a prostitute are killed in a small Polish town, and a journalist starts digging into the case, trying to discover the truth.”
THE BREAK
“Another little known Belgium show – this time in French – about a big city cop from Brussels who moves back to his home town with his daughter, right as a murder occurs and he’s thrust into the center of it.”
